# OEM parts and what independent means

> We are not a factory service center and we do not claim to be. What that changes about parts, pricing and warranty on a Sub-Zero repair, in plain terms.

Topic: parts and warranty. Published August 14, 2026.

Riverbend Refrigeration is an independent appliance repair company. We are not
affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Sub-Zero or its parent company,
and we do not describe ourselves as a factory service center, because we are not
one. This page explains what that actually changes.

## What it changes about parts

Nothing, in practice. We fit genuine OEM parts sourced through the manufacturer
supply chain — the same fill valves, gaskets, fan motors and control boards that
go into any other repair on the same cabinet.

We do not fit pattern parts on refrigeration control or sealed-system
components. The saving is small, the failure rate is not, and on a built-in the
labor to go back in a second time costs more than the part did either way.

## What it changes about who we work for

This is the part that matters. We are paid by the homeowner, not by a
manufacturer program, and nothing in our arrangement rewards a particular
outcome. That has three consequences we can state without hedging.

**We will tell you when a repair is not worth doing.** A fifteen-year-old
built-in with a straight door, an intact interior and one sealed-system fault is
usually worth repairing. A cabinet on its third sealed-system repair usually is
not, and saying so costs us a job.

**We will recommend things that earn us nothing.** Surge protection at the
service panel. Clearing a soffit that has closed off a built-in's exhaust path.
Adjusting a kitchen's ventilation so a wine cabinet is not working against an
afternoon west-wall load. None of those are billable to us, and all three
prevent repairs.

**We show the measurements.** Every number that led to an estimate goes on the
estimate, so you can take it elsewhere and get a second opinion on the same
data.

## Where the manufacturer's own channel is the better answer

There are cases where you should not call us first, and we would rather say so
here than waste your diagnostic fee.

If the appliance is inside the manufacturer's original warranty period, use the
manufacturer's channel. An independent repair may affect coverage, and there is
no benefit to you in paying us for something that is already covered.

If there is an open service action or a goodwill program on your specific model,
that is between you and the manufacturer, and it is worth a phone call before it
is worth a service visit.

If you need a warranty claim adjudicated on a part that failed inside its
original coverage, the manufacturer's channel is the one that can do it.

## Our own terms, stated exactly

**Diagnostic.** A flat fee, credited in full toward the repair if you approve
the work. It covers the measurements described elsewhere on this site, not a
glance at the cabinet.

**Estimate.** In writing, before any part is ordered and before any labor is
billed. If a second fault is found during a repair, it goes on a revised
estimate and waits for your approval.

**Warranty.** 90 days on our labor. 365 days on the parts we supply.

**Credentials.** EPA Section 608 universal certification, which is a genuine
federal requirement for handling refrigerant and is the only certification we
claim anywhere on this site. We service Sub-Zero refrigeration and nothing else,
because a shop that claims every brand is guessing on most of them.

## Why we put this in writing

The independent repair trade has a reputation problem, and it is mostly earned
by shops that are vague about affiliation and vaguer about pricing. The remedy
is not a slogan. It is stating the terms in advance, on a page anyone can read
before they call, and then holding to them.
