The condenser deck of a built-in sits at the TOP of the cabinet, behind the upper grille,
and rejects heat into the room. Nearly every complaint we are called to starts somewhere
cheaper than the sealed system, and the order of work below is what proves it.

## The order of work

01. Shelf temperature, both compartments — Own probe, logged. A built-in runs two independent sealed systems. Which compartment is warm halves the fault before anything is opened.
02. Condenser condition and discharge air — Air temp at grille. Lost airflow presents exactly like a low charge. One of those costs a fraction of the other.
03. Supply voltage while the compressor starts — Meter at receptacle. A reading taken at rest says almost nothing. Marginal supply impersonates a failing control board.
04. Evaporator frost pattern — Interior panel off. Frost is directional evidence. Partial coverage points one way, a solid block over the coil points at defrost.
05. Air movement and duct clearance — Visual and by hand. A stalled fan or a blocked return gives a warm section with a perfectly healthy sealed system behind it.
06. Door seal contact and cabinet level — Perimeter test, two axes. A seal open over a few inches loads the box with humid air continuously and holds a compartment above setpoint.
07. Sealed system — Gauges, EPA 608. Last, and only once everything cheaper is eliminated in front of you and written on the estimate.

## What a built-in is, physically

- It is trimmed into joinery: A built-in is not a freestanding box pushed into a gap. It is fixed to the surrounding cabinetry, and the panels, grille and trim come off in a set order before it moves at all.
- It exhausts upward: The condenser deck sits behind the upper grille and rejects heat into the room. A soffit or a run of moulding returned across the top of the opening puts the machine back on its own discharge air.
- It is heavy and it rolls on rails: Pulling a cabinet forward is a two-person job on protected flooring. Hallways, door casings and a turn at the end of a run decide whether it can leave the room at all.
- It expects its own circuit: A dedicated 20-amp line, not a share with the counter receptacles. Where it is shared, the fault is intermittent and it reads as a control problem.
- It is usually plumbed: Ice and dispenser models take a supply line through the floor or the rear wall, with a stop behind or below the cabinet that is frequently painted open or never fully opened.
