# Ice maker not producing

> Sub-Zero ice maker producing nothing, hollow cubes or a mold that never releases. The order we check it in, what we measure, and what it costs.

System: ice making. Cabinet: built in refrigerator.

## Symptoms an owner reports

- No ice at all after 24 hours with the arm down
- Cubes come out hollow, short, or fused into a slab
- The mold fills but the harvest never releases
- A thin white crust on the fill tube or the mold
- Ice tastes of the freezer, or smells stale

An ice maker is a small water system with a heater and a motor attached, and
almost everything that goes wrong with one here goes wrong on the water side
first.

## What we check, in order

**Water arriving at the valve.** The saddle valve or the quarter-turn stop
behind the cabinet is the first thing to fail, usually because it was never
fully opened at installation. We read pressure at the inlet before touching the
appliance.

**The fill valve screen.** The valve is a small solenoid with a fine inlet
screen, and the screen collects what the water leaves behind. A partially
blocked screen gives a short fill: the mold only half covers, and the cubes come
out as thin crescents or fuse into a slab because the harvest heater cannot free
them cleanly.

**Fill volume and cycle time.** We time a fill and measure what actually lands
in the mold. This is the single most useful number on the call, and it is the
one that separates a water problem from a control problem.

**The mold heater and the harvest motor.** If fill volume is correct and the
mold is full but nothing ejects, the fault has moved to the harvest side.

**Freezer air temperature at the mold.** A section of the cabinet running warm
will stall ice production long before it spoils food, so we log the actual
temperature at the ice compartment rather than trusting the display.

## Why the fill measurement decides everything

Jacksonville water is hard, and JEA publishes the figure by ZIP code rather than
a single city number; the published Duval readings run from roughly 194 to 336
ppm. Mineral carried in at that concentration does not leave with the water — it
stays on the inlet screen, the valve seat, the mold surface and the fill tube,
and it is the reason a cleaned valve is a reset rather than a permanent repair.

That is as far as the water explanation goes on its own, because it does not
tell you which half of the machine is at fault. Timing a fill and measuring what
actually lands in the mold does, and it is why that measurement comes before any
part is discussed.

**If the fill is short.** The restriction is upstream of the mold: the supply
stop, the line, the inlet screen or the valve itself. The mold never fully
covers, so the harvest produces thin crescents or fuses what is there into a
slab. Replacing the ice maker assembly at this point changes nothing, because
the assembly is doing its job with the water it was given.

**If the fill is correct and the mold is full.** The fault has moved to the
harvest side, and the assembly is now genuinely in scope: the mold heater, the
harvest motor and its switch, and the ejector. A mold that fills and never
releases is a different repair from a mold that never fills, and they are
routinely quoted as the same thing.

**If both are correct and there is still no ice.** Look at the compartment. An
ice maker stops well before food spoils, so a freezer section running a few
degrees warm will stall production while everything in it still looks fine. We
log the actual air temperature at the mold rather than trusting the display,
which is also how we catch a display reading that has drifted away from the
shelf.

## What "proving the supply" means

The stop behind the cabinet is the single most common fault on the whole
assembly, and the story is almost always the same: it was never fully opened at
installation, or it was closed for other work and returned to a position that
looks open and is not. A half-open stop passes water, so nobody suspects it, and
it starves a fill valve exactly the way a blocked screen does.

The line itself counts as supply too. A run pinched behind the cabinet when the
machine was pushed back into its opening will do the same thing, and so will an
in-line filter that nobody has changed. All three produce an identical
complaint, which is why the reading at the inlet comes before the screwdriver
rather than after it.

## The cabinets that fail first

The unit that fails soonest in a house is rarely the one in the kitchen. It is
the bar or pantry ice machine that runs for a party and then sits idle for
three weeks. Standing water in the line and the mold has time to deposit and dry
between cycles, which concentrates the mineral instead of flushing it.

If you have a second refrigeration cabinet that only gets used occasionally, say
so when you book. We would rather look at both on one visit than come back in
four months.

## What we will not do

We will not replace an ice maker assembly as a first move. It is the easiest
part to sell on this appliance and one of the least often actually at fault. If
the fill volume measures correct and the mold is full, the assembly is doing its
job and the fault is elsewhere — in the harvest circuit, the compartment
temperature, or the control.

We will also not tell you that a cleaned valve is permanent on hard water. It is
not, and pretending otherwise just means you pay for the same visit again.

## What it costs

The diagnostic is flat and it is credited toward the repair. You get a written
estimate before any part is ordered, and if the honest answer is that the
appliance needs a decision rather than a repair, we will say so on the first
visit.
