Scope: Sub-Zero refrigeration only: built-in refrigerators, integrated columns, undercounter cabinets, wine storage and ice machines. No other manufacturer and no other appliance category. No heating, no air conditioning, no air handlers and no ductwork.

# Is it worth fixing a Sub-Zero?

> The repair bands and the replacement comparison on one sheet, with the arithmetic that joins them.

Both halves of the repair-or-replace decision on built-in refrigeration, printed together:
what a completed repair has run, and what stands on the other side of it. We do not sell
appliances, so the recommendation at the end costs us either way.

## What does the repair cost against replacing the cabinet?

- Diagnostic: $80 flat, credited toward the repair once the work is approved
- Door gasket or seal replacement: $230–$620, parts and labor together
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor: $270–$580, parts and labor together
- Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor: $240–$640, parts and labor together
- Ice maker, water valve or supply line: $250–$670, parts and labor together
- Electronic control board: $420–$860, parts and labor together
- Compressor or sealed-system repair: $900–$2,340, parts and labor together

A range and not a price: the part decides the number, and the part is not known until the
cabinet has been measured. The firm figure is written down before anything is ordered.

### Against replacing the cabinet

- A comparable built-in: $8,600–$19,400. A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; replacing a column pair is usually two purchases rather than one. Appliance pricing is national, unlike the labour above.
- Typical 36-42 inch built-in, the usual repair-or-replace comparison: $11,600–$16,800
- Custom panels and integrated cabinetry, on top of the appliance: $2,000–$5,000
- Replacement wine storage or an undercounter unit, appliance only: $3,500–$5,500

## Three verdicts, and where each one starts

01. Repair it — Anything that is not the sealed system. A fan motor at $270–$580, a defrost part at $240–$640, a door seal at $230–$620, a control at $420–$860. Set any of those beside $8,600 at the very bottom of a replacement and the sum does not need working out. On a cabinet whose doors still hang parallel and whose liner is uncracked, these are upkeep rather than a verdict on the machine.
02. Weigh it — A first sealed-system repair. $900–$2,340 is the only band on this site worth pausing over, and it still sits inside half of $11,600–$16,800 for the appliance on its own. What settles it is not the figure but the cabinet around it: how the doors sit, whether the liner is sound, and whether this is the first time the sealed system has been opened at all.
03. Stop — Three conditions, none of them a price. A leak in tubing routed through the foam of the case, where reaching it means destroying the liner. A third sealed-system repair on one machine. A case or a door racked out of true, which nothing afterwards will seal against. In all three the money buys months instead of years, and the estimate will say so even though saying it costs us the work.

## The fifty percent rule, and the number it gets divided into

The rule of thumb says stop once the repair passes half the cost of replacing the thing. It is a sound rule, and on refrigeration trimmed into a cabinet run it is almost always applied to the wrong number, because a built-in is not replaced at the price on the appliance. A comparable cabinet is $11,600–$16,800, and the panels and cabinetry that make it match the run are $2,000–$5,000 on top of it, before delivery, removal, disposal and fitting.

Halve that and the threshold lands a long way above the dearest line we publish. The sealed system, at $900–$2,340, is the only band that comes near the conversation, and it comes at it from well underneath. Every other repair on the schedule clears the test without an argument being needed.

So the rule is necessary and it is not sufficient. A $230–$620 door seal fitted to a cabinet whose case has racked passes the arithmetic comfortably and is still a bad piece of spending. The threshold tells you when to stop. It does not tell you when to start, and that half of it comes out of the $80 diagnostic rather than out of a table.

## What the visit settles before you decide anything

Flat diagnostic fee, credited in full toward the repair if you approve the work. Written estimate before any part is ordered or any labor is billed. The estimate carries the readings that
produced it, so it can be taken to somebody else and checked against the same data. Where the
answer is to stop, the sheet says stop.

## Questions people ask before they decide

### Is it worth fixing a Sub-Zero refrigerator?

Usually, and by a wide margin. A door seal runs $230–$620 and a control board $420–$860, against $8,600 at the very bottom of a replacement. Only a sealed-system fault makes it a real question, and even then the answer turns on the state of the case rather than on the price.

### What is the 50 percent rule, and does it hold on a built-in?

The rule says replace once the repair passes half of a replacement. It holds — but the half is larger than people expect, because the appliance alone is $11,600–$16,800 before $2,000–$5,000 of panels and cabinetry goes on top. Every band we publish clears that threshold, the sealed system included.

### Is it worth repairing a twenty-year-old built-in?

Age on its own decides nothing; the case and the liner do. A twenty-year-old cabinet with square doors and an intact liner earns a $240–$640 defrost part or a $420–$860 control without hesitation. The same cabinet racked out of true, or on its third sealed-system visit, does not.

### How much does replacing the compressor cost?

It falls in the sealed-system band, $900–$2,340, parts and labour to one line. The spread is wide because reaching a brazed circuit on a cabinet trimmed into joinery is most of the work, and the $80 diagnostic says which end of it you are looking at before you commit.

### What pushes a quote to the top of its band?

Access, mostly. A cabinet that has to come forward on protected flooring, a soffit closed across the top of the opening, a seized grille fastener, or a part specific to a serial range that has to be ordered rather than carried. The fault names the band; the kitchen decides where in it you land.

### What does the $80 diagnostic settle before I decide?

Which compartment is failing, whether airflow or charge is behind it, whether the supply into the cabinet is sound, and what condition the case, the liner and the doors are in. It ends in a named part, a figure in writing, and a recommendation — including, where it applies, not to spend it.
