Neighborhoods, and what changes in each

A century of building separates one side of this county from the other, and the appliance does not change with it. What changes is the opening it sits in, the circuit behind it and the air it breathes. A page only exists here when there is something true of that place and nowhere else.

P-18 Coverage is a drive time, not a marketing radius

Three conditions decide how a call runs, and they do not overlap neatly. West of the river and through the older river-side blocks, the kitchens predate the appliance category: openings that were widened rather than rebuilt, circuits shared with the counter receptacles, and heart pine over long spans that moves enough between a humid August and a dry January to break a door seal. Within a few blocks of the ocean, the condenser stops fouling and starts corroding, which changes the recommendation from cleaning it to replacing it. On the Southside, the kitchens are straightforward and the quantity is not — four refrigeration cabinets in one house, three of them plumbed, and the one that fails first is always the one nobody uses.

What does not change is the order of work. Whatever the address, the sequence below runs the same way, cheapest and most reversible first, with the sealed system last and every reading written on the estimate.

Order of work, every address 7 stations · cheapest first
  1. Shelf temperature, both compartments A built-in runs two independent sealed systems. Which compartment is warm halves the fault before anything is opened. Own probe, logged
  2. Condenser condition and discharge air Lost airflow presents exactly like a low charge. One of those costs a fraction of the other. Air temp at grille
  3. Supply voltage while the compressor starts A reading taken at rest says almost nothing. Marginal supply impersonates a failing control board. Meter at receptacle
  4. Evaporator frost pattern Frost is directional evidence. Partial coverage points one way, a solid block over the coil points at defrost. Interior panel off
  5. Air movement and duct clearance A stalled fan or a blocked return gives a warm section with a perfectly healthy sealed system behind it. Visual and by hand
  6. Door seal contact and cabinet level A seal open over a few inches loads the box with humid air continuously and holds a compartment above setpoint. Perimeter test, two axes
  7. Sealed system Last, and only once everything cheaper is eliminated in front of you and written on the estimate. Gauges, EPA 608

Sealed system last. Every reading written down and handed over.
