Sub-Zero built-ins, and what changes by neighborhood

A century of building separates one side of this county from the other, and the appliance does not change with it. What changes is the opening it sits in, the circuit behind it and the air it breathes. A page only exists here when there is something true of that place and nowhere else.

Three conditions decide how a call runs, and they do not overlap neatly. West of the river and through the older river-side blocks, the kitchens predate the appliance category: openings that were widened rather than rebuilt, circuits shared with the counter receptacles, and heart pine over long spans that moves enough between a humid August and a dry January to break a door seal. Within a few blocks of the ocean, the condenser stops fouling and starts corroding, which changes the recommendation from cleaning it to replacing it. On the Southside, the kitchens are straightforward and the quantity is not — four refrigeration cabinets in one house, three of them plumbed, and the one that fails first is always the one nobody uses.

What does not change is the order of work. Whatever the address, the sequence below runs the same way, cheapest and most reversible first, with the sealed system last and every reading written on the estimate.

General note 1 — scope of work

On the ticket
Built-in and integrated Sub-Zero refrigeration, indoors, in a kitchen or a pantry: refrigerators, freezer and refrigerator columns, undercounter cabinets, wine storage and ice machines. The sealed system, the controls, the fans and defrost, the door and its gasket, and the opening the cabinet is trimmed into.
Not on the ticket
Heating and air conditioning. We do not install, service or diagnose furnaces, heat pumps, air handlers, condensing units for the house, thermostats for the house, or ductwork. We are not an HVAC contractor and not a ventilation contractor, and we do not hold ourselves out as either.

Any other manufacturer, and any cooking, laundry or dishwashing appliance of any make. One product line from one maker is the entire reason we are useful on it.
The name
Sub-Zero on this site means the appliance manufacturer — the name stamped on the built-in refrigerator in the kitchen. It is a refrigeration brand, not a heating or cooling contractor with a similar name.

Does the price change by address?

One book for the whole county. The flat diagnostic is the same in every ZIP inside the radius, and the bands below are the ones these kitchens produce most often. What changes from one sheet to the next is which of them is likely, not what it is charged at.

$80 buys the readings; $640 is the ceiling of everything scheduled above it. The written estimate sits between the two and carries one figure, handed over before a part is ordered.

Questions about coverage

Does the price change by neighborhood?
No. $80 flat to diagnose anywhere inside the radius, and the same bands afterwards. What changes by address is which fault is likely: corrosion on the beaches, the opening and the circuit in the pre-war belt, sheer quantity of cabinets on the Southside.
Every ZIP on this list — does that mean every appliance too?
No. The list is places, not trades. In all of them we work on built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration and nothing else: no other manufacturer, no cooking, laundry or dishwashing appliance, and no heating, air conditioning or ductwork of any kind anywhere on the list.
Is there a call-out charge on top of the diagnostic?
No. Travel inside the service radius is part of the $80, and there is no second line for arriving. Outside the radius we say so on the phone rather than producing a surcharge once we are standing in the kitchen.
