A dead panel is not always a dead board. The supply-side checks that come before any control is replaced.

Control boards are the part most often replaced unnecessarily, because a dead panel looks like a dead board and the substitution is easy to sell. It is also frequently wrong. Before we quote a control, we prove that the control is actually being supplied with what it needs.
Voltage at the receptacle, then under load. A reading taken with nothing running tells you very little. We read while the compressor starts, because a weak neutral or a shared circuit shows up only under load, and a board browning out on every start will present as an intermittent panel.
The receptacle itself. Built-ins in older houses are frequently on a receptacle that was added during a remodel and never inspected since. A loose back-stab connection heats, oxidises and drops voltage. We look.
Ground reference. A control board reads sensors against a reference. A poor ground produces readings that wander, and the visible symptom is a cabinet that holds temperature perfectly at 2am and badly at 6pm.
Harness and connectors. Twenty years of vibration and Florida humidity works on crimps and pin contacts. A green connector is a finding.
Sensors. Every temperature sensor is measurable. If a sensor is reading out of range, the board is doing exactly what it was told with bad information, and replacing the board changes nothing.
Only when the supply, the ground, the harness and the sensors are all proven do we agree that the board is the fault.
Jacksonville averages roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year. That is not a lightning-strike statistic — direct strikes are rare. What matters is the volume of switching events, brownouts and surges that ride in on the service over a long convective season, and the cumulative effect on electronics that are powered continuously for a decade.
Two practical consequences:
Consequence one — failures cluster. Board work moves seasonally. We see more control faults from June to September than in the rest of the year combined, and they often follow a specific afternoon storm the homeowner remembers.
Consequence two — protection is cheap relative to the part. A whole-house surge device at the panel, or at minimum a quality point-of-use device on the refrigerator circuit, costs a fraction of a control board. We will say this on the first visit whether or not it earns us anything, because a second board failure two summers later is a worse outcome for everyone.
Be aware that a point-of-use protector on a refrigeration circuit must be sized and rated for a motor load; a strip intended for a computer is not the right device.
Then it is the board, and we say so with the measurements behind it. Control parts for built-in refrigeration are not inexpensive, so the estimate goes to you in writing with the diagnostic evidence attached before anything is ordered.
We also check whether the failure took anything with it. A board that failed because a fan motor was drawing hard will fail again if the motor is left in place, and diagnosing only the visible casualty is how a repair becomes two repairs.

The display had gone blank while the cabinet carried on cooling normally. He checked the harness at the hinge, found a conductor broken inside the sheath from years of door swing, and repaired it.
